Our Roots

Started in 1984 by Herman & Bertha Toevs, the Breadbasket was organized to meet the need of a place for their morning coffee & something light while gathering with friends and neighbors.

Originally located next door to the present day facility the menu graduated to soup & sandwiches at lunch time.  Due to poor health, Bertha closed the business in August of 1991.

After suffering a total loss to fire at the Hesston Colonial House, Craig & Marilyn King purchased and reopened the Breadbasket in May of 1992, bringing with them 8 years of successful restaurant experience.

They have expanded the menu, hours, and vision for the business, following a decision to abort plans for rebuilding the Colonial House.

In April 2005 employees Barry Lehman and George Eason along with their wives purchased the business from the Kings. In 2016 Chad Lehman joined the management team.

The present day facility includes seating for 164 people located in one of two dining rooms.  The cafeteria style operation provides for quick delivery of your food.  You can enjoy your meal in a casual atmosphere decorated with gift items that add warmth to the room.

Barry, George, and Chad look forward to the future growth of the business, and the rewards it will bring.

Our Recipes

Our recipes are the pride and joy of our business.  Some have been handed down for generations.  Most have been modified for food service equipment and production.  Many require specific brands of spices and seasonings not available to the public.  For these reasons we request that you not ask any of our staff for a recipe.  We will be happy to help direct you to a recipe similar to ours.
