Grand Central Is a gathering place for Newton area adults 55 and older. We have been serving the community since 1987 and are celebrating our 30th Anniversary this year.
Our mission is to help older adults be engaged in living, be enriched socially and be enlightened through new learning experiences. Our goals are to encourage healthy living, provide education and leisure activities and to reduce and/or prevent social isolation. Medical research has shown that socialization reduces the risk for cardiovascular problems, some cancers, osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis, Alzheimer’s, lowers blood pressure, and reduces risk for mental health issues such as depression. In 2016 Grand Central served 400 people who made 15,500 visits and we send our monthly newsletter and calendar to almost 700 people.
Funding for Grand Central is provided by the Harvey County Senior Mill Levy, Harvey County United Way, City of Newton, private contributions, and fundraising activities.
We are a 501.c.3 non-profit organization and we meet the highest standards (Level 4) established by the Department on Aging for allocation of county mill levy funds.
We participate in the Harvey County Resource Council, Harvey County Council on Aging, Central Plains Area Agency on Aging and Mid-Kansas Senior Center Association.
